Day 13 / June 29– Június 29/ tizenharmadik nap

Kb 200km-t. S ismét leborultunk a balti tengernél. Bár ezúttal a meztelen fürdőzés elmaradt.

A kempingekre.

Persze, Tallinba járnak olcsó city-breakre a finnek. Egy vekni kenyér 50 cent. Ugyanaz egy kompnyival arrébb 2.50.

Time to leave for Tallin has came. It was a mythical moment. After all, when we reach Tallin we will basically have reached home. Only a 3 hours ferry ride and 621kms would separate us from Oulu. In the excitement we were hectic, getting ready in the morning trying to reach our destination quick as we might. We have travelled some 200 kms but I am not certain of exact numbers. I cannot find my blue book right now. A shame, it is a good book.  We reached our destination eventually.

There are a number of campsites in Tallin. The first one didn’t really function as a campsite. The next one was full of tarmac and concrete and caravans and campers. There was some festival going on so the grass was taken away.  The third one in the marina was the jackpot, they had grass, expensive showers and shitty facilities and some stench of piss. At least it was dirt cheap.

The city, in which we spent the next days is quite a remarkable place. This time, driving in it was fascinating to recognise so much of Finland. In fact, it felt more like Finland than Finland itself.  The way all, that was typically Finnish, companies, services, manners and attitudes piled sky high was almost kitsch. It nice though in some twisted way though. But I guess necessary. From across the Baltic many come to spend a cheap holiday, and it does apparently help that you can stuff yourself at the local hessburger outlet. And tallin is catching for its price I am sure. The same loaf of bread that cost there 50 cents, over the Baltic will fetch five times that much.

 I almost forgot, Sork!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was the last streach we knew we would see storks. We were completely loosing orselves in screaming on top of our voices when spotting one.

Day 12 / June 28– Június 28/ tizenkettedik nap

Thinking back, I must admit that this day was The day of our journey. The old campers left in the morning leaving for us much of the grounds. We shortly slipped into a way of being where time ceased to exist. The routines of the day became joys. I had to go out to the shop at some point,  maybe I was gone for an hour or so. Jen and the children spent the time doing the laundry. She claimed she never had such a relaxing time.

We of course spent time on the beach and finally, for the first time of my life I swam in the Baltic. Jen didn’t think I would go in. She has known me for some years and not once she saw me in a natural body of water. True enough, I think I have swum in the North Sea maybe once or twice before we met and I have lived in Oulu for three years without trying – in front of her – swimming in the open. (once in an October I went in to the river)

Different times come now. It wasn’t easy though. The coast wasn’t  allowing for a sudden dip. That was a good distance away. I had to run and do it fast. I left everything behind… (there is no video of this)
We talked that perhaps in the future we could holiday just finding a nice campsite like this (now we know of 2 such places in Europe). We could rent a spot for a month don’t go anywhere, only enjoy being, living in its most simple ways.

This time we only had this day. We realised that we had to get to Tallinn earlier than we wanted to. Jen was in need of a valid passport to cross the sea. After the weekend it could have been too late and we could have missed the arrival of our belongings to Oulu. (which eventually wouldn’t have been an issue as they came at the latest possible convenience of the shipping agents). All in all, we only had this one full day at our dream camp. The following day we had to move on.

Jen s önmagam meglepetésére megmártóztam a Balti habjaiban.

Legalább most már két olyan kempinget ismerünk Európában ahol érdemes hosszabb időt eltölteni. Ez is valami.

Day 11 / June 27– Június 27/ tizenegyedik nap

Végül megtaláltuk a tengerparti kempinget.

Régi Mercedes lakóbuszokon járják a világot.
--
On the road again, knowing this time we will drive less than 100km. We were also equipped with special, trusty knowledge acquired at our previous night’s stay; a map of cool campsites of Latvia. There were two on the coast before the border to Estonia and we knew for a fact that one of them was on the coast.

It was a cloudy morning but as the Baltic at long last came to our site the last of the clouds have disappeared and the weather turned. It was warm, sunny and wonderful. Our stork spotting hobby has also begun to take a turn as we grew ever more excited when seeing one of these bellowed birds screaming on the top of our voices ’stOrk!’ We knew deep in our hearts that we were getting closer to lands where storks are nothing more than twisted characters of financially motivated fairy tales.

We found the first campsite and it was a place where teambuilding meetings and other crazy courses organised everyone getting drunk in the evenings in the onsite fancy bar and a place where regular campers aren’t really welcome. However, there was a sing for another cam just further down the road. It was an amazing place and at first we didn’t believe our luck so we drove on to the next spot on our map.
That was a mistake, the place should have remained a spot on the map. It was a sorry windswept place without anything at all to give an impression it’s nice. So we went back to the little place at the end ot the road which turned out to be just 51 meters from the shore, which was right behind the trees. It was a good place, we loved it. The kite flew.

We met some people as well for a change – although they left next morning. Interesting folk, two couples with two Mercedes campers. Both almost as aged as our car. One of the couples have been living in the car for a good many of years traveling the world, always on the road. We were a bit jealous yet smiled at them too. I think they were used to impress people, but when it comes to traveling we are hard to get. Have had, and were having our own fair share of ’unusual’ ways.

Day 10 / June 26– Június 26/ tizedik nap

It was time to go. And we did, deciding to stop only for lunch and coffee until we reach the Baltic. And at time we were serious about this. The whole journey wasn’t happening proper, rubbish or non existent campsites and on top of it all, barely favourable or particularly unfavourable weather conditions.

This morning it was kind of cloudy and miserable as well. It remained so for much of the drive ahead of us. It was a long drive especially with the turning and twisting around just north of Riga. We followed signs for campsites only to find them not existing anymore or being turned into a holiday resort where we weren’t welcome.

We didn’t quite make it to the coast. At last, Driving through a military exercise and training ground on a road that was probably only suitable for tanks we found a pretty nice place. Only that it was most deserted on a Sunday evening, but that didn’t bother us much after sitting the car for 413 kms. We decided once again to take a bungalow.

Lili loved the place, we haven’t seen a playground since Lublin and it was a real nice one. It was a free place and there was also hot water that didn’t smell like rotten eggs. It was pleasant and even the sun came out. We made a fire and had a rather relaxing evening.
--

Day 9 / June 25– Június 25/ kilencedik nap

The day when we haven't really gone anywhere, only to the nearby little town where they didn't really sell dummies, altough we have found the pharmacist now and maybe they did. We didn't chekc. The previous day at the shop they could have suggested to try instead of driving 30kms. There were cemeteries too, old and new

And some strange giant wood carving figurines fetish
És óriás fafargvány mánia is

Day 8 / June 24 – Június 24/ nyolcadik nap

I slept well and yet again we were quick packing up camp and leaving. Lithuania and the last planned stop awaited us. At this stage I have no idea why and why we believed we would find anything there other than ruins of a long forgotten campsite.

We had no choice but the hope that eventually we find our dream spot to take a couple of days rest. Although this has not happened, close to the Polish-Lithuanian border at Seirijai, 271 km from our previous night’s rest we have found a disappointing, but at least existing campsite. They had had a washing machine to which we were granted access to. We have lost the dummy so after setting up camp and doing some laundry we took a 30km ride to the nearest pharmacy to get one. It was the most expensive dummy we have ever purchased. We noticed that our environment for this last 300kms has begun to acquire ‘nordic’ characteristics.
